Why Canada?
HSBC Expat Explorer Survey 2019 ranked Canada
3rd as destinations chosen by expats.
Amongst all the emerging destinations Canada has been the most promising with liberal immigration policies. Canada welcomes immigration with open arms, and Canadians generally view both immigrants and their country’s immigration system more positively than their counterparts in the United States. This is due in part to the Canadian government’s efforts to promote and embrace a policy of multiculturalism and make diversity part of the national identity. Canada welcomed roughly 340,000 new permanent residents in 2019, the highest number in more than a century.
Beyond being multicultural, Canada is known for its diversity and inclusivity in other ways. The country has strong support for the LGBTQ community. In 2005, Canada became the 4th nation in the world to legalize same-sex marriage and the first outside of Europe.
Though Canada has always been a country that welcomes immigrants, America’s recent approach to immigration has led more immigrants to turn to Canada as a viable alternative for starting a new life. This has put Canada on the world stage as an alternative place to seek out the so-called American Dream.
What makes Canada so attractive to migrants:
- - Embraces multiculturalism and immigrants
- - One of the most inclusive countries in the world
- - 10th largest economy in the world
- - World-class education system
- - Rapidly growing technology industry
- - Access to universal healthcare
- - Best benefits, holidays and paid leave in North America
- - Safe country and a beautiful place to live
Economy and Job Market
Canada punches above its weight when it comes to the world economy. Despite having the 38th largest population in the world, Canada has the 10th largest economy with an output of 1.6 trillion or $48,100 per capita. Canada overtook Russia in 2015 to claim a top 10 spot. Though Canada is well-known for its wealth of natural resources, Canada’s economy is actually heavily service-oriented with 78.9% of Canadians working in a service-related job, according to Statistics Canada. Though the goods-producing sector is relatively small in comparison to the service sector, Canada’s manufacturing and oil and petroleum industries have experienced small but steady annual growth over the last several years.
Migrants in Canada fill gaps in the labour market, thus making it essential that they have the same access to jobs in order to ensure their long-term success, and in turn, Canada’s long-term success.
Infact Canada has been successfully handling the impacts of the pandemic on the Canadian Labour Market. Data released by Statistics Canada (in July and August) reflect that the initial recovery of employment post the restriction being lifted has been stronger than any other previous economic downturns. According to a recent Labour Force Survey, about 55% of the 3 million jobs lost since April have been recovered as of July. Approximately 419,000 jobs were added in July 2020 and 245, 800 jobs in August 2020, a fourth-straight month of gains that has recouped almost two thirds of employment losses from the pandemic. Overall Canada's job market shows positive growth and is indicative of the support to immigrants from the Government of Canada.
